you will submit a 500-word proposal (include word count at the end of your proposal, not including your name, date, etc.) that identifies the topic, scope, argument, and approach you intend to take in your project. You must include a working title with your proposal. The proposal is considered exactly that—a proposal of what you plan to explore in the second half of the course as you prepare your presentation and paper. It is expected that your argument will change, and your focus will shift as you uncover new information. You will discover new sources. You may change your topic entirely; this is fine. The proposal is a necessary and critically important starting point.

The required components of the proposal include:

  • Working title
  • Introductory paragraph, including your working thesis statement (what is your argument?). The introduction is the “map” or “blueprint” for your essay; it tells your reader what you will be doing, how, and why it is important.
  • What are your sources?
  • What is your approach?
  • How will you be constructing your argument (how is the paper to be organized)? Think about what sort of sub-headings you might use to organize your paper.
  • The format: Times New Roman, double-spaced, 1-inch margins.

You must also include a working bibliography. The working bibliography must include at least SIX (6) sources. You may NOT include Internet sources (for the project, you may consult with me about Internet sources, however, I do not want you to include sources from the Internet in this stage of the process). For the working bibliography you must find scholarly journal articles and books. The reason why I am asking you to restrict yourself to these types of sources is because it will serve as a barometer for how viable your project is in terms of current scholarship. You are required to use the University of Chicago Manual of Style (Links to an external site.), 17th edition. For the bibliography see the University of Chicago Manual of Style 14.23.
